Alabama Women Finish Regular Season Undefeated in College Play

The University of Alabama women's wheelchair basketball team finished its 2023-2024 regular season undefeated in NWBA Intercollegiate Division play with a perfect 23-0 record. It is the team's second consecutive season going undefeated in college play.

The Crimson Tide wrapped up their regular season division play by going 4-0 at the University of Illinois College Tournament presented by Hollister on Feb. 9 and 10.

They beat the City University of New York 43-12 on the morning of Feb. 9 behind a game-high 14 points by freshman Mary McLendon, who also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, and followed that up with a 62-37 over the host University of Illinois shortly after that same day.

Four Alabama players had double-digit scoring performances in the win over Illinois: seniors Mary Silberman and Bailey Moody each had 18 points, and graduate student Joy Haizelden and sophomore Ixhelt Gonzalez each had 10 points. Moody grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Alabama followed that up with a 67-21 win over the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater and a 50-40 win over the University of Texas at Arlington the next day.

Three Crimson Tide players had double-digit scoring performances in the win over Wisconsin-Whitewater: Gonzalez with 14, McLendon with 13, and freshman Lisa Clary-Gailbert with 10. McLendon also had a game-high seven rebounds.

Two Crimson Tide players had double-digit scoring performances in the win over Texas-Arlington: Silberman with 18 points and Gonzalez with 16 points.

That was Alabama’s seventh win over Texas-Arlington, the Crimson Tide’s most frequent opponent this season and the team they beat in the national championship game last season.

Seventeen of the Crimson Tide’s 23 division wins this season have come by 20 or more points, and nine have come by 30 or more points. Their narrowest margin of victory was a 51-47 win over Texas Arlington on Jan. 27, their only single-digit margin of victory win.

Alabama will wrap up its regular season with a single non-division game against the ABC Medical Legends at home at Stran-Hardin Arena on Feb. 23 as part of the UA Online Invitational. The Legends dealt the Crimson Tide their only loss of the season, a 71-51 in the season opener on Oct. 28.

Alabama has a 24-1 overall record this season going into that game.

The Crimson Tide will conclude their season at the NWBA Women’s Intercollegiate National Championship Tournament on March 7-9. The Tournament will once again be hosted at Stran-Hardin Arena.

Alabama will be looking for its fifth consecutive national championship and the program’s tenth overall. national championship.
