International Nature of the Team on Display in Alabama Women's Latest Win

Four players had double-digit scoring performances in the University of Alabama women’s wheelchair basketball team’s 62-48 win over theUniversity of Texas at Arlington on Jan. 20 as part of the UA Early College Classic at Stran-Hardin Arena.

Those four players are from four different countries.

Sophomore Ixhelt Gonzalez was the team’s leading scorer with 15 points. Gonzalez is from the United States (Chicago).

Graduate student Joy Haizelden had 13 points. Haizelden is from the United Kingdom (Southampton, England).

Graduate student Loieza Vari Le Roux had 12 points. Le Roux is from France (Lampaul-Ploudalmezeau).

Senior Mary Silberman had 12 points. Silberman is from Israel (Shear Yeshuv).

In addition to those four countries that are represented by players on the Alabama women’s wheelchair basketball team, players on that team come from nine different states (Virginia, Minnesota, Idaho, Texas, California, Wisconsin, Georgia, Alabama, Illinois).

The Alabama men’s wheelchair basketball team has players from three countries: the United States, New Zealand, and India (and an assistant coach from Australia) and ten states: Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Washington, Florida, Texas, Mississippi, and Kentucky.

The two players on the Alabama Wheelchair Tennis team are from two different countries with junior Max Barbier from the United States (Abita Springs, Louisiana) and freshman Martha Harris from the United Kingdom (Nottingham, England).
