Alabama Men Finish Third at National Tournament

The University of Alabama men’s wheelchair basketball team entered the national tournament as the No. 3 seed and left with a third-place finish. After opening the tournament with a 55-51 win over No. 6 seed University of Texas at Arlington in the quarterfinals on March 14, the Crimson Tide lost to No. 2 seed University of Wisconsin at Whitewater 74-58 in the semifinals on March 15 before bouncing back with a 64-56 win over No. 5 seed University of Illinois in the third-place game on March 16. Alabama trailed Texas-Arlington 21-20 at halftime. Its shooting improved from 32.3 percent (10/31) in the first half to 57.7 percent (15/26) in the second half. For the fifth consecutive time and tenth time overall, the University of Alabama women’s wheelchair basketball team are national champions. The Crimson Tide earned their latest championship by beating the University of Texas at Arlington 75-57 in the championship game of the Women’s Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball National Tournament on the afternoon of March 9 at Stran-Hardin Arena. The University of Alabama women’s wheelchair basketball team got a first-round bye due to their high seed, but the No. 1 seed Crimson Tide opened got off to a fast start once they started their tournament play as they jumped out to a 14-2 lead over the No. 4 seed University of Arizona five minutes into the game. Alabama outscored Arizona in each quarter and came away with a 65-35 win over Arizona in the semifinals of the Women’s Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball National Tournament on the evening of March 8 at Stran-Hardin Arena where every tournament game is being held. “It starts from our warmup. We had a really good warmup as a team,” said Alabama graduate student Joy Haizelden. “I think the home crowd got us really hyped for the game. The University of Alabama men’s wheelchair basketball team finished the 2023-2024 regular season with 20-6 overall record and a 13-4 record in Intercollegiate Division play. Those four division losses are twice as many as the Crimson Tide had last regular season, but the team is on a three-game win streak in college play going into the NWBA National Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Intercollegiate Tournament, which will take place on March 14-16 at Southwest Minnesota State University. After finishing the 2023-2024 regular season undefeated in college play at 23-0 , the University of Alabama women’s wheelchair basketball team now turns its attention to the NWBA Women’s Intercollegiate National Tournament, which is taking place on March 8 and 9 at home at Stran-Hardin Arena. The Crimson Tide will not be playing on the first round of the tournament, having received a first-round bye after finishing undefeated in division play and earning the tournament’s top seed. The University of Alabama women's wheelchair basketball team finished its 2023-2024 regular season undefeated in NWBA Intercollegiate Division play with a perfect 23-0 record. It is the team's second consecutive season going undefeated in college play. The Crimson Tide wrapped up their regular season division play by going 4-0 at the University of Illinois College Tournament presented by Hollister on Feb. 9 and 10. The University of Alabama men’s wheelchair basketball team entered the Auburn University Tournament presented by Coca-Cola with a 10-3 record in NWBA Intercollegiate Division play. They left with a 13-4 record in division play after winning three of four games at the tournament. The Crimson Tide opened the tournament with a 52-22 win over the University of Missouri on the morning of Feb. 2 behind a game high 19 points by sophomore Tim Houston on 9-of-15 shooting.
