Bama Women Sweep University of Arizona Tournament

The University of Alabama women’s wheelchair basketball team advanced to 18-0 in NWBA Intercollegiate Division play this season after adding three more victories at the University of Arizona Tournament Presented by Hollister and finished the tournament with a non-division win. The Crimson Tide opened the tournament with a 47-25 win over the University of Texas at Arlington in the early afternoon of Jan. 26 behind a dominant defensive performance where they held the Mavericks to 12/52 (23.1 percent) shooting from the field, including 0/4 on three-point attempts. International Nature of the Team on Display in Alabama Women's Latest Win

Four players had double-digit scoring performances in the University of Alabama women’s wheelchair basketball team’s 62-48 win over theUniversity of Texas at Arlington on Jan. 20 as part of the UA Early College Classic at Stran-Hardin Arena . Those four players are from four different countries. A row of flags representing the different home countries of Alabama Adapted athletes hangs next to the basketball court at Stran-Hardin Arena Sophomore Ixhelt Gonzalez was the team’s leading scorer with 15 points. Gonzalez is from the United States (Chicago). Graduate student Joy Haizelden had 13 points. Haizelden is from the United Kingdom (Southampton, England). Graduate student Loieza Vari Le Roux had 12 points. Le Roux is from France (Lampaul-Ploudalmezeau). Senior Mary Silberman had 12 points. Silberman is from Israel (Shear Yeshuv). Bama Women Sweep UA Early College Classic, Remain Unbeaten in College Play

The University of Alabama women’s wheelchair basketball team entered the UA Early College Classic undefeated in NWBA Intercollegiate Division play at 11-0. At the conclusion of the Classic, the Crimson Tide remained unbeaten in college play, adding four more wins to their record. The result of the final game of the Classic, a 62-48 win over the University of Texas at Arlington on the afternoon of Jan. 20, was the team’s narrowest margin of victory in division play so far this season. Alabama led Texas-Arlington 19-16 after one quarter, trailed 28-27 at halftime, and led 40-38 after three quarters. “UTA did some really nice things and, for us, it was just a matter of kind of figuring it out and taking what they were giving us, which we started to do a little bit more in the second half,” said Alabama coach Ryan Hynes. Bama Men Unable to Turn the Tide Against Arizona

The University of Alabama men’s wheelchair basketball team came into the UA Early College Classic with a 6-2 record in NWBA Intercollegiate Division play, with both of those losses coming at the hands of the University of Arizona. The Crimson Tide were able to beat Arizona on the afternoon of Jan. 19 to open the Classic and followed that up with a pair of wins over the University of Texas at Arlington that evening and the following afternoon, but Alabama lost to Arizona once again to close out the Classic’s action. Alabama led that final game 20-15 at halftime before ultimately losing 55-49. Alabama Wheelchair Basketball Teams Combine to Win Five of Six Games at Texas-Arlington Tournament

Both the University of Alabama men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball teams traveled to Arlington, Texas to participate in the University of Texas at Arlington Tournament presented by Honey Stinger where the women’s team won all three of its games while the men’s team won two of its three games. The Alabama women remain unbeaten in National Wheelchair Basketball Association Intercollegiate Division play after handily beating their three opponents: University of Arizona, University of Texas at Arlington, and University of Illinois. The Tide opened the tournament on the morning of Jan. 12 with a 54-19 win over Arizona behind a game-high 16 points by senior Bailey Moody. Zach Smith Takes Over as the New Operations Coordinator for Alabama Adapted Athletics

 Zach Smith is the new Operations Coordinator for the Alabama Adapted Athletics program having started the job in mid-November. Despite having no prior experience with adapted athletics, both Smith and program director Brent Hardin agree that he is the ideal person to take on the job duties. Smith had worked most recently as an operations intern for the Birmingham Barons Minor League Baseball organization and before that had been a lead marketing intern for University of Alabama at Birmingham athletics while finishing up his degree in Hospitality, Sport, and Tourism Management from Troy University. Zach Smith, the new Director of Operations Coordinator for Alabama Adapted Athletics, had worked most recently as an Operations Intern for the Birmingham Barons of Minor League Baseball. “One of the things we tried to really focus on is demonstrated competency.
